Chelating agents are also known as chelators, chelants, or sequestering agents. The chelating agents are chemical molecules that have the capability to bond with the metal ions present in the solution to form stable and water-soluble metal complexes. These complexes called chelates are basically divided into two type’s natural and synthetic organic or man-made chelates. The natural chelates help in the transportation of the nutrients throughout the body of the animals and plants which help in carrying out important reactions whereas the man-made agents have industrial, biological, and medical applications such as water treatment, scale removal, corrosion control, control heavy metal poisoning, and others.
Chelating agents such as the ethylenediamine, a multidentate agent, vitamin B12-cobalt complex, chlorophyll-magnesium complex, hemoglobin-iron complex are commonly well-known chelates having a number of application. Chelators are used even in the boilers to help dissolve common types of molecules during the usual operation process and help remove online and offline molecules to a greater extent from the boilers. The surface active sequestering agents are mostly used as corrosion inhibitors to form insoluble surface chelates. However, the drawback is the stimulation of the process of corrosion by the chelates formed by the chelating agents. The uncontrolled addition of the chelators can cause corrosion which can be avoided by the precise additional standards. Chelating agents used for the chelating therapy can be used to detoxify the poisonous metals such as lead, arsenic, and mercury by transforming them into chemically inert compounds. These agents can be beneficial as well as dangerous when used imprecisely.
According to a well-known U.S.-based market research firm, the growth in the chelating agent industry is expected to increase at a rate of 3.2% between 2013 and 2019.
