Genetic, chemical and pharmacological tests are carried out using high throughput screening (HTS). These tests are important to assess or detect presence of drugs, or drug trails, and in the study of drug design and drug interactions. For high throughput screening many devices are required such as detectors, instruments to analyze the genetic and bimolecular interactions and control software. Compounds are screened for inhibitors (antagonists) or activators (agonists) using high throughput screening. Metabolic enzymes and receptors can also be tested. HTS allows detecting the numbers of leads i.e. compounds that can produce the desired effect and that are active at low concentration. A large number of drugs such as cyclosporin A and mevastatin have been detected using HTS tests. The main task of the HTS is to detect lead compounds. Directions are then given for its optimization.
The global high throughput screening market growth is fueled by various factors such as growing number of drug screening requirements, increasing toxicological studies and stem cell research, technological advancements in HTS found by biotechnology companies, R&D programs initiated by research centers and governments, growth in research spending and venture capital investments. However, lack of trained professionals to handle HTS software and high cost of techniques may act as restraining factors for the market growth. Emerging markets with increasing R&D activities in stem cell and toxicology studies are projected to bring new growth avenues over the forecast period for high throughput screening market.
The high throughput screening market is segmented based on technology, application, product and services, end user and region. Based on product and services global market is categorized into instruments, software, reagent and assay kits, accessories and consumables and service. Reagents and assay kits are used and consumed frequently for HTS tests. Growing number of assay development, the increasing R&D expenditure, high incidence of diseases, continuous use of reagents for HTS tests and continued government support for research in drugs discovery are factors that attribute to the large market share of reagents and assay kits.
Based on technology, market is categorized into lab-on-a-chip, cell-based assays, label-free technology, bioinformatics and ultra-high throughput screening. Label-free technology segment is projected to register highest CAGR during the forecast period. This rapid growth is attributed to benefits offered by label-free technology. Label-free technology can be used to study diverse targets and cell types. Also probability of toxicity related drug attrition can be reduced; complex biological pathways can be studied using simple methods using label-free technology. Cell based assay technology was leading technology segment in 2018. Cell based assays segment is sub-segmented into 2D cell culture, perfusion cell culture, and 3D cell culture.
High throughput screenings market is segmented into primary and secondary screening, toxicology assessment, target identification and validation, and other applications based on applications. In 2018, target identification & validation segment was leading application segment due to growth in the number of potential drug targets for screening.
Academic and government institutes, Contract research organizations (CROs), pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies and others constitute the end user segment of the high throughput screening market. Market was led by pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies in 2018 in terms of revenue share. Growing use of HTS technologies for drug discovery and toxicology studies by biotech and pharmaceutical companies has attributed to the largest revenue share.
At regional level, North America held largest revenue share mainly due to the emphasis given to research and development by pharmaceutical companies, government support and funding, growing adoption of drug detection techniques, and large number of companies offering HTS services and products. European market was the second largest market due to government initiatives for drug testing, advancements in chemical testing, R&D by various research centers, development of automated testing hardware and software, and growing utilization of data processing software for high throughput screening. Asia Pacific region is estimated to gain rising popularity of HTS techniques.
Growing shift of pharmaceutical industry to automated processes using robotic systems and HTS from traditional approaches of using only one compound and low throughput is the major factor that would boost the market growth in Asia Pacific. Latin America is estimated to experience modest growth during the forecast period for high throughput screening. Middle East and Africa region is projected to register sluggish growth in the coming years.
Major players included in the report are Axxam, Corning, Thermo Fisher Scientific, Bio-Rad, Danaher, Hamilton, Agilent, Tecan, Merck Group, PerkinElmer, BioTek and Aurora Biomed among others.
