RUTF (Ready-to-use therapeutic food) is energy & micronutrient-rich soft or crunchable or drinkable food that can directly be given to patients or an individual without cooking. RUSF (Ready to Use Supplemental Foods) is food that is fortified with micronutrients as a remedy for malnutrition and can be consumed without cooking or by just adding water. RUSF provides all the nutrients as it is a mix of peanuts, butter, powdered milk, vegetable oil, sugar, vitamin, salt, and mineral. It has low water content and can be stored for several months without getting spoiled. It can be consumed by children or by adults with special nutrition requirement as a diet supplement. It is designed for specific nutritional and therapeutic purpose. RUSF is used for tackling the malnutrition at the earlier stages. Using this food, malnutrition can be prevented at an earlier stage of moderate acute malnutrition or prevent from acute malnutrition or chronic malnutrition. RUSFs can also be consumed along with breastfeeding and other nutritional supplements for children above 6 months of age. 

RUTF was first introduced during the situation of humanitarian emergency in the year 2000. It has all the nutrients required for recovery and it has a good shelf life.  It is not water based and does not have the risk of bacterial contamination. It does not require refrigeration in order to store it. It is safe and easy to use and does not require medical supervision. Moreover, it can be used in combination with breastfeeding and other practices used for infants and young children feeding.
