Introduction
The urinary tract system produces, retains, and disposes urine from the body. It is segmented into the upper tract and lower tract. The upper tract includes kidneys and ureters, while the lower tract includes the bladder & urethra. In an adult, kidneys constantly filter blood to produce nearly 1ml of urine each minute and then transport this urine to the bladder via ureters. The bladder stores the urine before expelling it through the urethra. When the urinary tract is functioning normally, the urine is flushed out from the urethra as the bladder is emptied, thereby avoiding the upward movement of bacteria from periurethral skin to the first urethra and from there to the bladder. However, some bacteria successfully manage to enter the bladder via the urethra but it is removed from the bladder during micturition.
Additionally, the bladder’s internal surface is lined with urothelial cells and covered by glycosaminoglycan mucin that does not allow bacteria to stick to the inner surface of the bladder. In this case, even if the bacteria is still able to stick to the surface despite surface resistance offered by glycosaminoglycan mucin, then the immune system of the internal body system can annihilate this bacteria. However, in case of problems occurring in the lower urinary tract like muscle atrophy or weak urinary sphincter, there is the occurrence of urinary incontinence meaning involuntary leak of urine from the urethra. Here, the use of a urinary catheter is inevitable. In case of enlargement of prostrate or urethral stricture or bladder stones or swelling of the bladder, there is urinary retention meaning non-empting of urine from the bladder. In this case, a urinary catheter is inserted in the urethra to make the urine flow after surgery.
Furthermore, a urinary catheter is an elongated tube that is made from various polymers with silicon utilized in large proportion along with latex rubber.
Market Growth Dynamics
A rise in the rate of ailments such as enlargement of the prostate, kidney problems, gall bladder stones, and nerve damage will steer the growth of the urinary catheter market over the years ahead. Apart from this, an increase in the number of surgeries and a prominent rise in the proportion of the aging population prone to urinary tract infections will steer the business growth over the forthcoming years. In addition to this, the surge in the incidences of urinary continence in people will further steer the market growth.
Furthermore, inactive lifestyles, indiscipline or messy life patterns, and unhealthy eating or incorrect dietary habits along with stressful as well as hectic lifestyles have resulted in urinary tract ailments, thereby driving the market trends.
However, the healthcare industry has witnessed many hospital-acquired nosocomial urinary tract infections due to the use of urinary catheters and this has resulted in the incurrence of huge healthcare costs along with critical illness. To overcome this limitation of the product, researchers have introduced urinary catheters manufactured with different kinds of advanced antimicrobial coating materials that will avoid causing hospital acquired infection in patients. This, in turn, will enlarge the market scope over the forthcoming years.
